Another deviation on the new tablet, playing with the Watercolors in Painter since my last (and first) attempt with them came out pretty cool I thought. Anyway this is the fictional love of my life- Archie Goodwin, as portrayed by Timothy Hutton in A&E's Nero Wolfe series.
I had capped this scene because Archie's coat in this- like so MANY costumes in the entire series- is breathtakingly gorgeous. So it's definitely referenced from the screencap, although I kinda crapped out on the detail and background.
As I worked through it, I made a bunch of mistakes- first of all using black to sketch with, and then painting on the actual pencil layer starting with standard Watercolor brushes for five or six washes, committing the layer and then using the Digital Watercolors, which I've decided are a lot more forgiving than the plain Watercolor brushes. I can't really explain my logic in switching between the two, other than, that's how I did the Vic piece and figured I'd try to stay pretty close to that method. I think the head may be a little too long, and the arm definitely looks like an "elbows don't work that way". Went over board on the eyebrows, because I like eyebrows and I tend to over draw them. Also not sure if Tim's eyes are actually blue, I have a feeling they are, but I didn't check.
I ended up using the bleach for the highlights on the nose and face. I don't know what happened to the lamp, I think I grabbed a dry brush and went past the undo point. What was learned: Omg- dry the layer. Often. Lighter pencils or keep them on another layer.
What I really like, other than it manages to look pretty close to Tim, is the jacket- I just love it. The screencap is on more of a darker, greenish tone but I love this hot goldenness.
In one of the Wolfe stories, there's a girl of about 16, who Archie calls a bobbysoxer. She collects newspaper clippings of Archie as he inevitably ends up in the news and she has a huge crush (I mean, who doesn't) on Archie. That is me on a good day. I'm not 100% sure, but I think she dies before the case is solved too. Which figures.

I have a love for his suits and hats in the series so much. I really liked his coats in Too Many Clients, they were 60's suits and really loved the styling and look. You did this wonderfully, the suit is gorgeous. The color and higlight on it are so cool! His eyes are blue, with a little green tint I think. They look very good here and the eyebrows I think are a very good feature in the piece. I think the background kind of falling away in this one helps it, because you want to focus on him in this one. And the smirk is very Archie! Very very nice!
